BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK 3-DAY ITINERARY

With this itinerary, you’re set for an unforgettable 3-day adventure in the mesmerizing landscapes of Big Bend National Park. Enjoy every moment of your exploration!

Day 1: Desert Oasis & River Marvels

Start your day early with a strong cup of coffee at your campsite or lodge. Head to the Chisos Basin, the heart of Big Bend, and embark on the Windows Trail. This 5-mile round trip will lead you through stunning desert landscapes and impressive rock formations, culminating in breathtaking views of the mountains. After your hike, enjoy a well-deserved picnic lunch in the Chisos Basin. Take in the views of the towering cliffs while you refuel for the adventures ahead.

Drive to Santa Elena Canyon, one of the park's most iconic sights. The towering cliffs and the Rio Grande winding through the canyon are a photographer's dream. Hike the Santa Elena Canyon Trail (1.6 miles round trip) for a closer look at the stunning geology and vibrant river life. As night falls, settle into the Chisos Basin Campground or your chosen accommodation. Big Bend is renowned for its dark skies—perfect for stargazing. Bring a blanket, lie back, and soak in the cosmos. You might even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way in all its glory!

Day 2: Mountains, Canyons, and Off the Beaten Path

Fuel up with breakfast and hit the Chisos Mountains for a challenge. Tackle the Lost Mine Trail (5 miles round trip) for spectacular views of the basin and the surrounding peaks. The trail is moderately challenging, but the vistas are worth every step! Post-hike, grab a quick bite at the Chisos Mountains Lodge Restaurant, where you can savor local flavors with a view.

Venture to the Mesa de Anguila (the “Anguila Table”), and take the Devil’s Hole Trail (2.5 miles round trip). This hidden gem offers solitude and unique rock formations. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that calls this area home! Head to the historic Boquillas area. You can cross the border into Mexico via a short boat ride (check for current regulations). Enjoy authentic Mexican food at a local restaurant and soak in the vibrant culture before returning to the park for the night.

Day 3: River Adventures & Scenic Splendor

Kick off your final day with an adrenaline rush on the Rio Grande. Rent a canoe or kayak for a morning of paddling through the breathtaking canyons. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, consider a guided rafting trip to explore the river’s beauty and learn about its history. Pack a lunch and enjoy it by the water, surrounded by the sounds of nature. Take a moment to appreciate the stunning rock formations and the vibrant flora and fauna.

After lunch, explore the Chihuahuan Desert on the Cottonwood Campground Trail (3 miles round trip). This easy hike will take you through lush vegetation and offer insight into the unique desert ecosystem. Wrap up your adventure by heading to the Rio Grande Village Overlook for a breathtaking sunset. The vibrant colors reflecting off the mountains and river will be the perfect end to your Big Bend journey.

The desert can be unforgiving; always carry enough water. Temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, so dress in layers. Leave No Trace: Respect the park’s beauty and wildlife by following Leave No Trace principles.
