CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK 2-DAY ITINERARY
Crater Lake National Park, with its stunning blue waters and dramatic cliffs, is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Here’s a perfect 2-day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit.
Day 1: Explore the Rim and Scenic View
Start your day at the Visitor Center to gather maps and information. The rangers can provide tips on current trail conditions and must-see spots. After the Visitor Center, take a leisurely drive along the 33-mile Rim Drive. Stop at various viewpoints like Watchman Overlook and Cloudcap Overlook to capture stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Pack a lunch to enjoy at the historic Crater Lake Lodge, which offers beautiful views of the lake. If you prefer, grab a bite at the lodge's café. Spend the afternoon hiking a section of the Rim Trail. The trail offers different lengths; a popular option is the hike from Rim Village to the Watchman, approximately 2 miles round trip, with incredible vistas.
Head to the nearby Annie Creek Restaurant for dinner. The casual atmosphere and hearty meals are perfect after a day of exploring. End your day with stargazing. The park’s remote location makes it ideal for viewing the night sky. Bring a blanket and enjoy the serenity of the stars above Crater Lake.
Day 2: Adventures and Nature Immersion
Wake up early to catch the sunrise over Crater Lake from Rim Village. The golden hues reflecting off the water are breathtaking. If visiting between late June and mid-September, consider booking a boat tour of the lake. It’s a unique way to see Wizard Island and learn about the lake’s geology and history. After your boat tour, grab a quick lunch at the Rim Village Café.
If you have time, take a short boat ride to Wizard Island. You can hike to the summit for panoramic views or enjoy a picnic on the island. If you prefer landbased activities, hike down to Cleetwood Cove (1.1 miles one way). It’s the only trail that leads to the lake’s shore, where you can swim or relax.
Enjoy a final dinner at the lodge, soaking in the views one last time. Take a short walk along the Rim Drive to reflect on your adventures and the stunning landscapes you've encountered.
Tips for Your Visit:
Check the weather forecast before your trip, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Bring plenty of water, especially during hikes. Keep an eye out for wildlife but maintain a safe distance. Leave No Trace: Follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the park’s beauty.
With this itinerary, you'll have a fantastic two-day adventure at Crater Lake National Park, filled with breathtaking views and memorable experiences. Happy exploring!
